The Beauty of Upcycling

The consumer world has evolved into prioritizing local and sustainable products for purchase. Companies at both local and corporate levels are revising their business plans to appeal to the buyer mindset that pays attention to where products are coming from, and how they are made. Anything to leave behind a more conscious environmental footstep, am I right?

While producing environmentally and socially responsible products is nothing new, it’s something we will continue to see even more of in 2020. Here are some benefits to creating and purchasing upcycled jewelry in particular:

  1. The positive impact on the environment. Pulling elements from the environment can lead to the pollution of our air and waterways. By upcycling, that need for additional raw materials is eliminated.

  2. The lower cost for production. Repurposing elements allow for companies to lower their costs for production in terms of materials and labor, which in turn lowers the cost for the consumer.

  3. The limited use of natural resources. Reusing elements limits the cases of deforestation and loss of the earth's natural fibers and resources.

  4. The support for local businesses. Sharing elements with local retailers or designers allows them to become providers of sustainable waste management. Upcycling within the community allows for a boost in the economy.

  5. The level of creativity. Today’s trends are manufactured in bulk, leaving little to the imagination. Upcycling challenges designers to continuously create really unique, beautiful pieces.

Tess of Buffalo Bannon Designs continues to showcase her creativity through upcycled materials. Speaking from direct experience, Tess recently upcycled a bracelet that I hold near and dear. After years of natural wear and tear, the everyday staple of mine unfortunately snapped in half. Tess took the existing stone and silver and reconstructed the bracelet into a unique version that I can now continue to wear every day!
